What governs marine fouling assemblages on chemically-active antifouling coatings?

چکیده
From an environmental perspective, there is a need to reduce the amount of biocides in chemically-active antifouling (AF) coatings, as these can cause severe damage marine life. In this study, six active molecules known booster were added at 3 wt% solvent and aqueous-based acrylic paints. DCOIT, dichlofluanid, zinc pyrithione, copper tralopyril zineb used alone mixed with lower (I) oxide thiocyanate (10 wt%) than currently or fillers. Field immersion tests carried out Atlantic Ocean (Ste Anne du Portzic) Mediterranean Sea (Toulon), contrasting physicochemical properties water macrofoulers' biodiversity. Microscopic analyses showed that AF coatings reduced bacterial density differently for short times Ste Portzic. After four/five months immersion, results, including multidimensional analyses, first specific patterns assemblages depending on site. addition, structure was affected by biocide itself combination binder. When efficient, appeared decrease richness strongest effect Toulon. DCOIT most performing whatever site polymer binder used. found be efficient against bacteria macrofoulers The pyrithione ZnO fillers paints exhibited highest activity over 16 immersion.

Modern approaches to marine antifouling coatings
Marine structures such as platforms, jetties and ship hulls are subject to diverse and severe biofouling. Methods for inhibiting both organic and inorganic growth on wetted substrates are varied but most antifouling systems take the form of protective coatings. Biofouling can negatively affect the hydrodynamics of a hull by increasing the required propulsive power and the fuel consumption. This...
متن کاملControlling Marine Fouling with Antifouling Paints and Underwater Hull Cleaning
trolling marine fouling on ships’ hulls has been considered essential since the earliest days of marine transport. It has been estimated that without any attempt to control fouling, shipping would require 40% more power, equal to about 72 million tonnes of additional fuel per year.1 Therefore, without an effective antifouling system, today’s marine transport industry would undoubtedly grind to ...
متن کاملElectroactive Polyhydroquinone Coatings for Marine Fouling Prevention—A Rejected Dynamic pH Hypothesis and a Deceiving Artifact in Electrochemical Antifouling Testing
Nanometer-thin coatings of polyhydroquinone (PHQ), which release and absorb protons upon oxidation and reduction, respectively, were tested for electrochemically induced anti-biofouling activity under the hypothesis that a dynamic pH environment would discourage fouling. Antifouling tests in artificial seawater using the marine, biofilm-forming bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus proved the coatings...

متن کاملFouling and antifouling: some basic aspects
In the marine environment any solid, exposed undefended surface will become fouled. Similarly, fouling may effect numerous species which are able to tolerate a certain degree of epibiosis. In contrast, many others actively maintain t h e ~ r body surface clean of epibionts ('antifouling'). This paper illustrates aspects of the epibiosis/antifouling complex and discusses the omnipresence of foul...
